Starting off 2018 on a high
note in the airline industry, some of South Africa's
airports and air routes have placed the country on the
global aviation map. According to a global
ranking system called the Punctuality League, which
ranks the best on-time performance (OTP) for the world's
largest airlines and airports, the air route between
Cape Town and Johannesburg is one of the busiest and
most reliable domestic routes in the world.
The Punctuality Report for 2018 states that the
Cape Town to Johannesburg route ¡V ranked ninth busiest
domestic route in the world ¡V has an average OTP of
86,83%. FlySafair is the top performing airline on this
route with a 95,9% OTP. Comair was second best with an
87,4% OTP, followed by SAA with 85,5% and Mango airlines
on 80,5%.
The busiest and most reliable domestic route in the
world is Jeju to Seoul Gimpo in South Korea.
In addition to this, Durban's King Shaka International
Airport ranked fourth in the top 20 list of small
airports in the world by OTP, with a coverage rate of
80% and an OTP of 86,65%. According to Punctuality
League, a small airport is categorised as having between
2,5 million to five million passengers departing per
year.
The Punctuality League is based on "57 million flight
records using full-year data from 2017 to create a
ranking of the best OTP for the world's largest airlines
