Kindly be
reminded that the
Department of Home Affairs stopped issuing Temporary Passports from 01
September 2014. This was due to South African citizens
travelling abroad being refused entry into a number of countries when
travelling on Temporary Passports. This then resulted in accusations and
claims against the DHA in cases where citizens were refused entry into a
particular country despite the Department having issued the Temporary
Passport.
A Temporary Passport was initially issued as an interim travel document due
to longer turn-around times taken to issue a permanent 10 years tourist
passport. South Africans are once again urged to submit new passport
applications at LOSA 12 months prior to expiration date of the current
passports. Finally, Temporary Passports have been abused for corruption
purposes and this threat persisted, which put South Africa at risk of its
travel documents being unreliable and not trustworthy. Elimination of
Temporary Passports was also to remove this risk.
